Vector Aerospace Granted STC for Bell 205 “Glass Cockpit” Installation

Langley, BC, Canada - Vector Aerospace Helicopter Services-North America (Vector), a subsidiary of Vector Aerospace Corporation, has been granted an FAA Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) No. SR03043NY for an integrated cockpit display system (ICDS, or “glass cockpit installation”) for aftermarket installation in the Bell 205 series helicopter. The Vector STC applies to Bell models 205A, 205 A-1, 205B and 212.

A flight management system (FMS) is often mistakenly called a long-range navigation system. I say mistakenly because the FMS does more than just long-range navigation. The FMS acts as a navigation manager, and in doing so, reduces the number of system controllers on the flight deck and helps reduce the pilot’s workload. By workload I am talking about the amount of data presented to the pilot on several different displays, and how the pilot analyzes that data and determines what is the best data to use to get from point A to point B. As the navigation manager, the FMS is smarter and faster than the pilot, and can perform intricate calculations quickly on large amounts of data to give the pilot the best way to get from point A to point B.

Like car batteries, one of an aircraft battery’s functions is to start the engines (or the APU). But the comparison stops there as, on board an aircraft, batteries are required to do much more. In-flight electrical generation failure is an emergency that calls on the batteries to power the essential loads until landing and evacuation. They have even been used to restart the engines after the rare cases of engine flame-out. They also act as a buffer regulating the DC network voltage ensuring acceptable power quality for the equipment connected to it. As these various functions attest, aircraft batteries are critical products and/or systems and deserve to be treated and maintained with care.
